Skating Your First Game
With so many new skaters coming into the
teams, we see some training mistakes repeated often.
Most skaters in their first
professional bout are nervous and excited, yet common
skating techniques are overlooked. Rookies thrown into
the mayhem of a live bout find they have much to learn.
Skating with the pro-teams requires an
awareness about what the skaters feet are doing and where
other skaters place their feet.
In live games, skaters cannot be focused
myopically on the floor in front of them or on their
balance. This must all be natural. Good derby
skaters develop an awareness of how the 'game' looks to the
audience and cameras.
With proper practice of the 5-stride, skaters can
can ride in the pack without tripping into others.
The easiest way to know that you're watching
amateur roller skaters is to watch for any uneven strides that actually trip other
skaters, even their own team members.
If a skater is tripping over their own skates
they have basic seasoning work to do.
Teammates may overlook a few stumbles or
mishaps at first but it is the responsibility of a rookie to
learn even striding pack work and derby skating without
tripping or harming any other skater.
A rookie could go back into training if they
are harming others on the track.
The future is bright for the
Bombers; as
popular in 2008 as they were in 1968.
The Bay City Bombers
join brother and sister teams
world-wide. Our derby family and DIY culture is jammed with a loyal
fan base that helps the BOMBERS reach new
audiences every
season.
The Bombers by the Bay have been
recognized by the media as the leader of the sport,
trailblazing equality for all roller athletes for many decades.
The
Bay City Bombers Training
Program is the entry point for skaters
interested in America's fastest growing sensation.
The Bomber
team fields a sassy roller girls and rugged roller guys squad's competing
against arch enemy teams under the same Internationally sanctioned
rules. The team
stays true to roller derby's
1935 roots.
But, that's where the old days end.
Today, skaters compete with amazing speed,
banked track agility mixed with bone crushing
grudges; reinvented for our rock 'n roll generation Y.
In 2007 hundreds of new skaters tried out. In 2008 only the best will survive.
The Bombers are
the team most imitated.
